As an early childhood educator, I am well aware that children say some very honest, interesting things. As an educator, I was blissfully unaware of the intense, complicated subjects that come up at home. As a mama, I have been forced to say things like: "I'm not sure how roofs are built but we can look for more information," "Some people might think God is a star," and "Babies come out of the belly through the vagina."

Today though, I was speechless and moved to tears. My 4 year old, who sometimes tells me, "This bathroom is dirty, you need to clean it" and other unkind things like "I love snuggling with daddy more," said, "My heart exploded with love for you guys."

Sometimes I am not so sure whether I am a decent parent or an utter failure, but when I listen to what she says that seems completely out of the blue, I know that somehow I am doing a good job. Children don't always show appreciation, and it's never the way you expect, but they do appreciate you. And they are watching and listening to learn from you.
