I am a sociologist by nature, therefore I love to watch documentaries. I watched two in a row about human trafficking across the world and right here on our doorstep in Denver. Did you know there are more people enslaved now than any other time throughout history? 20.9 million people, mostly young girls, are slaves in the commercial sex industry. I was completed blindsided by both documentaries. I knew there was a problem but I did not know how deep the waters ran. Now that I do, my goal is to help end it so future mothers, fathers, daughters don't have to fight for their life in such a tormented way. The first step to ending modern slavery as the big wigs call it, is to raise awareness. Sure, it happens in Vegas, but did you know there's a huge problem in Denver? Did you know they prey on girls at school, online, at the mall, anywhere they may be without their parents? After watching Tricked, I became painfully aware of all the times as a young girl that I got lucky. Lots of us do get lucky and never become victims, but lots don't. I want to educate so that my daughter never becomes a victim. Of course she will also never be without a big, ferocious pit bull by her side!
Seriously though, let's do something! Instead of marching for women's rights that we're not in danger of losing (voting, abortion, etc.) let's march for the 20.9 million women and men who currently have absolutely no rights. Let's teach our vulnerable young women that there are people out there that will manipulate them into the sex trade but they need to be confident and strong and fight. Join me in raising awareness!
